Welcome to Higgins in Japan!
Hey there! I’m Higgins, and I’ve been living and teaching in Japan since 2012. Over the years, I’ve taught everyone from kindergarteners who think high-fives are more valuable than the yen (which might be true) to Vice Presidents of massive corporations who are working internationally and want to make sure their English is good enough during business meetings. No stress there!
I started this website because I want to help other teachers in Japan—and anyone thinking about taking the leap. These days, it feels like it’s easier to complain about the problems than to offer real solutions. Sure, we could all sit around making fun of the struggles of teaching English in Japan, but let’s be real: Japan is currently ranked 92nd in English proficiency. So, instead of just pointing out the issues, I want to try and do something about it.
I’ve been around long enough to know what works, what doesn’t, and what will make you want to drive home at the end of the day questioning your sanity. If you’re already teaching in Japan and need advice, or if you’re thinking about making the move, you’re in the right place. My hope is that I can have special guests write blogs, or make videos, really anything that will help you become a better teacher.
While you’re here, if you’re interested in watching me drive around and talk to myself (which is an accomplishment in and of itself), head over to my YouTube channel and watch away!
There’s already plenty of criticism out there—I’d rather be part of the solution. So let’s figure this out together!
